Assisted Living in Washington State

Assisted Living communities offer private apartments along with help for the activities of daily living — bathing, dressing, medication management, meals, and assistance with mobility. What sets Assisted Living apart from Independent Living is the care: these communities have medically trained staff on site 24/7. The goal is to preserve as much independence as possible while filling in wherever help is needed.

Who it tends to suit

Assisted Living tends to fit people who:

• Need some help with bathing, dressing, mobility, or managing medications
• Want meals, housekeeping, and activities handled for them
• Benefit from having trained staff available at any hour
• Do not need round-the-clock skilled nursing care

What's typically included

Most Washington Assisted Living communities include:

• 24/7 medically trained staff on site
• Weekly housekeeping
• Restaurant-style dining with three meals a day, plus a bistro or snack area with coffee and tea always available
• An activities director and a full calendar of events
• All utilities, included in your rent

A few things worth knowing, because they vary by community:

• Transportation to doctor appointments and fun outings is common, though some more affordable communities offer limited transportation or none.
• Laundry service may not be included, and an in-unit washer/dryer is rare — but you'll usually have access to free shared washers and dryers on your floor. Some apartments do have their own; we can point you to those if that matters to you.
• Kitchens are usually a kitchenette rather than a full kitchen. Very few apartments include a stove or oven — we can tell you which communities do.

What's usually not included

• The care itself is not included in your rent. It is assessed based on the level of help your loved one needs and billed on top of rent.
• Round-the-clock skilled nursing or complex medical care
• Dedicated memory care programming, unless the community has a memory care wing

Typical costs (Western Washington)

Costs vary widely by apartment size, community, and the level of care needed — and they change often, so rather than list numbers that quickly go stale, here's what to expect: utilities are included in your rent, and there are entrance or community fees here as well. Care costs are separate from rent — they're assessed by the level of help your loved one needs and billed on top of the monthly rent. We can get you the current details for any community you're considering.

We also look at long-term financial fit — matching families with communities that align with their resources and have Medicaid contracts in place, so your loved one can stay in their home without having to uproot and start over. From there we narrow the field to three or four communities that genuinely fit and offer as much or as little support as you need — whether you'd like us by your side or prefer to go on your own with our touring tips. We then follow up to make sure the right fit is coming together. Every step of the way, we're here for you.
