Memory Care in Washington State

Memory Care is a specialized type of long-term care for people living with Alzheimer's disease, other dementias, or significant cognitive decline. Communities are designed to be secure, predictable, and calming. Staff receive additional training in dementia care, and daily programming is structured around what tends to help people with memory loss feel safe and engaged.

Who it tends to suit

Memory Care tends to fit people who:

• Have a diagnosis of Alzheimer's or another form of dementia
• Are at risk of wandering or getting lost, and need a secure environment
• Benefit from a predictable routine and dementia-trained staff
• Need more support and supervision than standard Assisted Living provides
• Like larger spaces for walking and socializing

What's typically included

Washington Memory Care communities include:

• A secure environment with staff on site around the clock
• Specially trained dementia care staff and structured daily programming
• Three meals a day, included in your rent
• Housekeeping and laundry services, included in your rent
• All utilities, included in your rent

A few things worth knowing, because they vary by community:

• Apartments are usually studio or single-bedroom style and, for residents' safety, do not have kitchens.
• Shared rooms are offered by some communities — for couples, or same-gender sharing — at a slightly lower rate.
• Transportation and group outings vary from one community to the next.

What's usually not included

• Care costs are an additional charge on top of rent, determined by how much assistance your loved one needs.
• Skilled nursing or complex medical care for conditions beyond dementia

Costs vary widely by community, room style, and the level of care needed — and they change often, so rather than list numbers that quickly go stale, here's what to expect: there are entrance or community fees, and your rent includes utilities, meals, and laundry service. Care is a separate charge, assessed by how much assistance your loved one needs and billed on top of rent. Shared rooms, where offered, come at a slightly lower rate. Because details like transportation, outings, shared-room options, and levels of care vary so much, we can tell you which communities offer what, and how each one is equipped to meet your loved one's care needs. If finances are a concern, we can also match families with communities that have Medicaid contracts in place, so your loved one can remain settled without the disruption of having to move. From there we narrow the field to three or four communities that genuinely fit and offer as much or as little support as you need — whether you'd like us by your side or prefer to go on your own with our touring tips. We then follow up to make sure the right fit is coming together. Every step of the way, we're here for you.
